The Westpark Apartments are the last remaining “Tower in the Park” public housing concept in Philadelphia. Built in 1962, by the early 2000s, the three high-rises were in significant decline. Developers agreed to rehab the towers and infill the “park” with additional housing and retail in a two-phase plan.

Greater connectivity across the site was planned through extending streets and infilling excess open space with townhomes and midrise buildings.

Phase 1 included the rehabilitation of one tower (Building B), a new 145 unit mid-rise (Building A), and 41 units within townhome construction (Building C).

Erdy McHenry was tasked with Schematic Design of Building B and the full design and documentation of A and C. My role was Project Architect for Buildings B (right) and C (left).

As part of its rehabilitation, Building B’s original brick facade would be removed and replaced with a unitized curtain wall.

Building C was designed for multi-family construction within the scale of a townhome facade. Thirty-one “townhomes” contain forty one units as part of Phase 1.
